September 2012

Greetings!

Now comes Autumn – undoubtedly the most beautiful time of year in Harper’s Ferry! This month will be a pretty exciting one for Steam at Harper’s Ferry. There are two events to which we want to draw your attention.

Gallery Exhibit Opening – “Steampunk Leisure” – September 22, 2012

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with the enthusiasm for the steampunk-themed exhibits, so these themed exhibits will continue as long as they are enjoyed. This exhibit starts on September 22, 2012 and goes through November 18, 2012.  Artists interested in submitting work for the exhibit have until September 7 to do so. Please see the website under the tab “Call to Artists- Exhibit ‘Steampunk Leisure’ –September 22 – November 18, 2012.”

Inaugural Event – Arts-Related Business Series – September 29, 2012

On September 29, we are introducing an arts-related business series.  There are two parts. The first part is something we’ve nicknamed “Shameless Steam” and we are looking for arts-related businesses and professionals who want to come and promote their art work or their art-related businesses at the event. The second part of the event will feature guest speakers. At this inaugural event, Cynthia Gayton (owner of Steam at Harper’s Ferry as well as a practicing attorney, author and university professor) and Larry Gillick (multimedia producer, New Media Evangelist, and former Shenandoah University digital media professor) will speak. Cynthia will make a presentation about how to protect fictional characters (literary and illustrated). Larry will discuss business and promotional issues facing artists and other creatives. There will be some time set aside for discussion, so we are looking forward to audience input. The event will be held from 4 – 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served. There is a $15 fee for attendees if received in advance, $25 at the door. You can register here.

If you are interested in promoting your arts-related business or your own work, please see the website under the post “Call for Presentations!” or follow the links under the “Events” tab.

Thank you for your support! We look forward to seeing you soon.

This weekend is the Mountain Heritage Festival – June edition. I went today to get my twice a year kettle corn and check out the new vendors. I was pleasantly surprised with the new additions and would recommend checking it out. What are your thoughts on the new logo for the Festival? I was looking for the Mountain Man dollar off advertisements in the local newspapers – and he wasn’t there! Mountain Man can be seen wielding his hammer in the parking lot, thank goodness.

Earlier this evening (June 8), I attended a book signing with local historian and author Bob O’Connor at the Bolivar-Harper’s Ferry Public Library. I visited Winchester, Virginia for the first time on Wednesday, which was fortunate for me so that I could better understand some of the episodes Mr. O’Connor discussed during his presentation about his newest book, “A House Divided Against Itself”.

Steam at Harper’s Ferry will be having a new exhibit opening at the end of June – Gadgets, Guns & Gears. Looking forward to this one! Some really nice work has come our way.

Have a wonderful weekend!

What a wonderful starting point for our Community Art Walk!  Unless I hear otherwise, the Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Library will be the first stop on the walk!  Gretchen Fry is the new librarian and she provided this summary for me to post:

The Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Library will be participating on Saturday April 28th from 10am-5:30pm.  View our permanent collection of photos of Harpers Ferry.  Books on Arts and Crafts will be on display and available for checkout.  Light refreshments served.

I’m a big technology supporter – but when it fails … Can’t tell you the frustration when not only wireless, but landline services are unavailable. Especially two days before a reception and a week before opening. I’m thinking I’ll laugh about it one day. But today, not so much.

Lots going on in the Eastern Panhandle this weekend – but the big event is the Mountain Heritage Festival. Decidedly low tech, which is what I’m aiming for right now. Kettlecorn, bluegrass, buckwheat and wrought iron. Yep.
